What’s the difference between Classroom Assessment for Student Learning: Doing It Right-Using It Well (CASL) and Student-Involved Classroom Assessment 3rd ed?
Classroom Assessmen for Student Learning represents the next generation of thinking from ATI and combines the workbook and Student-Involved Classroom Assessment, 3rd edition into one book. The CD and DVD that come with CASL helped ATI to consolidate the two books into one resource. CASL’s features include:
- More practical examples on Assessment FOR Learning
- Easier to read, teacher-friendly
- “best of the best”—best from 3rd edition text book and best from workbook
What’s the difference between Classroom Assessment for Student Learning: Doing It Right-Using It Well and Student-Involved Assessment for Learning, 4th ed?
The 4th edition is called Student-Involved Assessment for Learning and is available ONLY from Pearson Education. The 4th edition is a university-level instruction manual for teachers-in-training. That is, students who are studying to become teachers. CASL is a professional development resource, designed for teachers and school leaders already in the classroom.
Some people get really confused between CASL and the 4th edition. They think they need the 4th edition ‘because it’s the most current,’ but really they need CASL. I always ask them “are you buying this for teachers already teaching, or for students who are studying to become teachers?”
What’s the difference between Classroom Assessment for Student Learning: Doing It Right-Using It Well and Assessment FOR Learning: An Action Guide for School Leaders?
CASL is a resource for both teacher and school leaders that teaches how to use assessment for leaning in K-12 classrooms, on an everyday basis. Assessment FOR Learning is designed specifically for school leaders that are responsible for assessment policy decisions on a school or district wide level. The leader guide helps them assess where their school/district is currently, design a balanced assessment system, and then chart the path to achieving that vision.
We recommend both books to school leaders---school leaders need CASL to become assessment literate and then the leader guide helps support and nurture assessment for learning. The leader guide is NOT a replacement for CASL.
For teachers, we recommend CASL.
Are the videos suitable for an ethnically diverse high school? Are there clips that have high school students?
Yes, videos have K-12 clips, and more importantly, the concepts are applicable in all schools, in all settings. The videos are not content or curriculum-based—that means the theme of the video can apply to all content areas and all grades. Each district/school must “build their own” bridge, but ATI makes that as easy as possible. Preview our videos here.
