During this practical two-day workshop, ATI presenters will provide the foundation needed to facilitate effective professional development in classroom assessment using a learning team model of staff development.
This capacity-building training also prepares participants to be able to communicate with others, via short presentations, the benefits of assessment for learning and balanced assessment systems.
Who Should Attend This Workshop:
The Leading Professional Development in Classroom Assessment for Student Learning (LPD) workshop is for those who have interest in and ongoing responsibilities for professional development in classroom assessment at the building, district, local or state level.
Responsibilities Prior to the Workshop:
During the workshop, we will prepare you to lead others in learning more about classroom assessment. To prepare for this role, we ask that you complete a reading and viewing assignment prior to attending the session. The materials and instructions will be mailed to you about four weeks before the workshop date.
What You Will Learn:
This workshop is designed to give you the tools you need to introduce the concepts of assessment quality to others and then to manage professional development with the book Classroom Assessment for Student Learning: Doing It Right—Using It Well (CASL) as the central text. We have two broad goals for the session:
- To prepare you to communicate to others about the CASL program
- To prepare you to plan and manage a learning team experience for others
To accomplish those goals, we will do the following during the workshop:
- Deepen your understanding of keys to assessment quality
- Deepen your understanding of assessment for learning practices
- Share resources you can use to offer an introductory presentation explaining the concepts of classroom assessment quality and assessment for learning
- Share resources you can use to plan and manage professional development with the CASL text through learning teams
Approach:
After using various models of professional development, ATI has centered on the use of learning teams, or study groups, as the most effective and efficient way to help educators become assessment literate. We have developed all our materials (training guides, books and interactive DVDs) for this kind of adult learning and encourage educators to move beyond our tradition of seeing professional development as a series of workshops.
Session Description:
We will spend the first day and a half deepening your understanding of the central concepts of the CASL text—the keys to assessment quality, the assessment/motivation connection and assessment for learning. This will include practical activities that can be used in initial presentations and implemented in classrooms right away. On the afternoon of the second day, we will review the materials you will receive for facilitating learning teams and then give you time to outline an introductory presentation for your colleagues using ATI classroom assessment materials and your own expertise.
What You Will Receive:
- The book, Classroom Assessment for Student Learning: Doing It Right—Using It Well, by Rick Stiggins, Judy Arter, Jan Chappuis and Steve Chappuis
- Rick Stiggins’ DVD, Developing Balanced Assessment Systems, packaged with the position paper, Assessment Manifesto
- A CD that includes all of the handouts from this workshop and all of the resources needed to conduct an introductory presentation
- Learning Team Facilitator Handbook, a resource designed to support learning-team-based professional development around the text, Classroom Assessment for Student Learning: Doing It Right—Using It Well
